Why Buy SS-31?

Researchers buy SS-31 because it is one of the strongest peptides for protecting mitochondria, the tiny power plants inside cells.[1] SS-31 (also called Elamipretide or MTP-131) is a small four-amino-acid peptide. It gathers in the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it protects a key fat called cardiolipin and helps restore energy output.[1]

This makes it a central tool in research on aging, heart failure, and metabolic problems, where failing mitochondria are part of the story.

Benefits & Uses

SS-31 is studied for mitochondrial health and energy. Here are the main research uses:

  • Cardiolipin protection and inner membrane structure[1]
  • Electron transport chain (energy) efficiency research[1]
  • Lowering harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS)
  • Heart failure and heart injury models[2]
  • Brain protection and age-related decline models
  • Muscle energy and exercise capacity research
  • Kidney injury models

How It Works

SS-31 works by gathering strongly at the inner mitochondrial membrane, drawn there by its positive charge.[2] Once there, it binds cardiolipin, a special fat that holds the energy machinery in the right shape.[1] By protecting cardiolipin and its partner cytochrome c, it keeps the electron transport chain running well, cuts electron leak and ROS, and holds the membrane voltage steady.[1] In aged or damaged tissue, where cardiolipin is harmed, it helps restore this base, which improves energy (ATP) output and lowers oxidative damage.[3]

Frequently Asked Questions

How does SS-31 get into mitochondria?

SS-31 can cross cell membranes and is pulled into mitochondria by its net positive charge (+3). Inside, it gathers at the inner membrane by binding the negatively charged head groups of cardiolipin.[2]

Is SS-31 the same as Elamipretide?

Yes. SS-31 (Szeto-Schiller peptide 31), MTP-131, and Elamipretide are all names for the same four-amino-acid peptide. Elamipretide is the official name used in study reports.

Is SS-31 available in Canada?

Yes. Reviv Peptides supplies SS-31 in Canada as a 10 mg vial.

Reconstitution & Dosing Guide

How to Reconstitute

Add 1.0 mL of bacteriostatic water to the vial. Inject the water slowly down the inside wall of the vial — do not inject directly onto the powder. Gently swirl until fully dissolved; do not shake. This yields about 10.0 mg/mL. Store the mixed vial at 4 °C and use within 28 days.

Low Starting Amount (Research)

  • Amount per measure: 5 mg (5,000 mcg) — 50 units (0.50 mL) on a U-100 insulin syringe
  • Schedule: Once daily in research models
  • Study length: 8–12 weeks
