What Is Glutathione? Benefits & Overview

Glutathione (GSH) is the body’s most abundant endogenous antioxidant and a critical tripeptide (γ-Glu-Cys-Gly) involved in detoxification, immune function, and cellular redox balance. Available in Canada from Reviv Peptides as a 1500 mg lyophilized vial, injectable glutathione delivers dramatically higher bioavailability than oral supplementation — supporting liver detoxification, skin brightening, mitochondrial function, and immune cell activity at the cellular level.

The cysteine thiol group (–SH) is the reactive centre responsible for scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS), conjugating electrophilic toxins, and maintaining the cellular redox balance through the GSH/GSSG ratio.

Glutathione Benefits & Uses

  • Reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging and oxidative stress models
  • Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and reductase cycle research
  • Liver detoxification and phase II conjugation studies
  • Immune function — NK cell and T-cell activity enhancement models
  • Skin melanin synthesis inhibition and brightening research
  • Neurodegeneration and mitochondrial oxidative damage models
  • GSH/GSSG redox ratio assays

How Glutathione Works

GSH donates an electron (via its thiol) to neutralise ROS and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), forming oxidised glutathione (GSSG), which is then regenerated by glutathione reductase using NADPH. It is also the substrate for glutathione-S-transferase (GST) enzymes that conjugate electrophilic toxins for urinary excretion. In immune biology, GSH maintains the reducing environment required for optimal lymphocyte proliferation and cytokine production. In melanogenesis, GSH inhibits tyrosinase and shifts melanin production from eumelanin (dark) to pheomelanin (light).

Glutathione Canada FAQs

What is the difference between reduced and oxidised glutathione?

Reduced glutathione (GSH) is the active antioxidant form with a free thiol group. Oxidised glutathione (GSSG) is the spent form, two GSH molecules joined by a disulphide bridge. The GSH:GSSG ratio is a key marker of cellular redox status. Reviv Peptides supplies the reduced (active) form.

Why is glutathione relevant to skin research?

GSH inhibits tyrosinase activity and competitively binds copper cofactors in the melanogenesis pathway, shifting melanin production toward lighter pheomelanin. This mechanism underpins its study in hyperpigmentation and skin brightening models.

Is Glutathione available in Canada?

Yes. Reviv Peptides ships Glutathione 1,500 mg vials across Canada for licensed research use only.

Reconstitution & Dosing Guide

How to Reconstitute

Add 5.0 mL of bacteriostatic water to the vial. Inject the water slowly down the inside wall of the vial — do not inject directly onto the powder. Gently swirl until fully dissolved; do not shake. This yields approximately 300 mg/mL. Store the reconstituted vial at 4 °C and use within 28 days.

Low Starting Dose

  • Dose per injection: 100 mg — 33 units (0.33 mL) on a U-100 insulin syringe
  • Frequency: Once daily, subcutaneous injection
  • Cycle length: 4–8 weeks, then 2–4 weeks off

Start at the lowest effective dose and adjust based on individual response. Consult a qualified healthcare professional before use.
