What Is HCG? Benefits & Overview
HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is a glycoprotein hormone that mimics luteinizing hormone (LH) at the LH/hCG receptor. Available in Canada from Reviv Peptides as a 5000 IU lyophilized vial, HCG stimulates testicular Leydig cells to produce testosterone and is widely used in hormone optimization protocols alongside testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) to maintain testicular function and endogenous testosterone production.
HCG is naturally produced by the syncytiotrophoblast during early pregnancy and is the basis of pregnancy testing; its pharmacological use in research spans male and female reproductive endocrinology, steroidogenesis, and spermatogenesis.
HCG Benefits & Uses
- LH receptor agonism and testosterone biosynthesis models
- HPG axis stimulation and pituitary-gonadal feedback research
- Spermatogenesis and male fertility studies
- Ovulation induction and female reproductive endocrinology models
- Leydig cell function and steroidogenesis pathway research
- Cryptorchidism and testicular descent models
How HCG Works
HCG binds LH receptors on testicular Leydig cells, activating adenylyl cyclase and raising intracellular cAMP, which activates the steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) and the cytochrome P450 cholesterol side-chain cleavage enzyme (CYP11A1) to initiate testosterone biosynthesis from cholesterol. In female models, HCG triggers the LH surge equivalent at the ovary, inducing oocyte maturation and ovulation. Its longer half-life compared to endogenous LH (~36h vs ~20min) makes it an experimentally tractable LH surrogate.

HCG Canada FAQs
How is HCG used in testosterone research?
HCG mimics LH action at Leydig cell LH receptors, stimulating intratesticular testosterone production. It is used in research on HPG axis restoration, hypogonadism models, and anabolic steroid recovery protocols.
What is the half-life of HCG compared to LH?
Endogenous LH has a plasma half-life of ~20 minutes. HCG’s heavy glycosylation extends its half-life to approximately 36 hours, making it a far more experimentally manageable LH surrogate in research protocols.
Is HCG available in Canada for research?
Yes. Reviv Peptides supplies HCG 5,000 IU vials across Canada for licensed only.
Reconstitution & Dosing Guide
How to Reconstitute
Add 2.0 mL of bacteriostatic water to the vial. Inject the water slowly down the inside wall of the vial — do not inject directly onto the powder. Gently swirl until fully dissolved; do not shake. This yields approximately 2,500 IU/mL. Store the reconstituted vial at 4 °C and use within 28 days.
Low Starting Dose
- Dose per injection: 500 IU — 20 units (0.20 mL) on a U-100 insulin syringe
- Frequency: Three times weekly (e.g. Mon / Wed / Fri), subcutaneous injection
- Cycle length: 8–12 weeks
Start at the lowest effective dose and adjust based on individual response. Consult a qualified healthcare professional before use.
